Didier Comès, Ardennes Inking

Nearly six years after the death of the comics author, the ‘Didier Comès, Ardennes Inking’ exhibition is a magnificent collaboration between the author’s family, the King Baudouin Foundation and the Musée en Piconrue in Bastogne.

This exhibition focuses on an unsettling storyteller, a poet of the plant and animal world, whose illustrations, dominated by black and white, go from the most painstaking realism to total abstraction. Comès made his mark as one of the most esteemed authors of post-war Belgian comics. On the fringes of commercial styles and mandates, he created a remarkable universe, dominated by the violence of scrutinising difference, inhabited by sorcery and pagan rites, and marked by fantasy and dream.

This exhibition pinpoints the inspirations, personal experiences, historical references, research and encounters that guided Didier Comès in the creation of his albums. It opens an ethnographic dialogue between his drawings and objects loaned by museums and private collectors.

An incredible legacy, both material and immaterial, is waiting to be discovered.
