Wibald of Stavelot (+1158), Abbot and Prince of the Empire in medieval Europe. Gold and Parchment From 25 September to 29 November 2009
Wibald, a native of the region, became the abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy, one of the main Benedictine abbeys of the Empire. During his abbotship, he became one of the most influential figures of his time, advising all the German emperors in turn.
In the 12th century, the Abbey truly experienced its golden age. Wibald enhanced the splendour of the house by endowing the Abbey’s collection with outstanding pieces of Mosan goldsmithery. Today, those exceptional masterpieces are dispersed and kept in prestigious institutions.
This exhibition (which will subsequently become a permanent area) will offer a quite new scenography and present new audiovisual displays making it possible to convey the information in an interactive and educational way. It will help the visitor to have a better understanding of the importance of the Ardennes Abbey by shedding light on that auspicious period and on its artistic heritage.
