Charles Szymkowicz. From Apollinaire to Van Gogh: the expression of European genius From 19 June to 19 September 2010
The painter Charles Szymkowicz was born in Charleroi in 1948 and taught drawing and painting at the Academies of Fine Arts of Charleroi and Brussels. He is one of the Belgian pioneers of European New Figuration and Neo-Expressionism. Throughout his career, he has held many personal exhibitions in Belgium and abroad (Berlin, Paris, Cologne, Barcelona, Milan, San Gimignano, Venice, Warsaw, Jerusalem …).
His expressive and powerful style, the use of bright, incisive colours gives his works an amazing strength. A relentless worker, always loyal to his home town, he is known for his many portraits, including those of his friend: the French poet, musician and singer, Léo Ferré.
This exhibition is being held in the context of a publication by the Institut du Patrimoine wallon (IPW) and Espaces Tourisme & Culture (ETC), entitled “From Apollinaire to Van Gogh: the expression of European genius”, presenting the artists and the personalities who left a deep impression in Wallonia and throughout Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Szymkowicz is the one who has been chosen to immortalise these major figures with all the fervour he can muster.
