Face to Face. The mask in the comic strip From 12 February to 6 June 2010
In close collaboration with the International Carnival and Mask Museum of Binche, Stavelot Abbey presents, as part of the Wallonia-Brussels 2010 BD Comic Strip theme year, “Face to Face, the mask in the comic strip”. This exhibition proposes, through five continents, a confrontation between the image of masks depicted in comic strips and those of the impressive collections of the Mask Museum of Binche.
Fifty or so masks are on display and brought together with forty or so different authors (Franquin, Comès, Giraud, Servais, Tibet …). The masks are presented opposite an enlargement of the illustration from the corresponding comic strip, with two captions: one about the traditional use of the mask and one about the tale in which the author stages it.
An opportunity for the Abbey to reserve a space for regional folklore too, with the famous mask of the Blanc Moussis from Stavelot, together with those of Malmedy.
